🛠️ Data editor

Areas, temperatures, group sizes, barrier grades and salinity come from Frontier’s Zoopedia (checked 22 Oct 2026). Biome, diet and size are my own tags (used for the layout art and sorting); correct them here if you spot a mistake. Saved in this browser.

🔧 Cohabitation overrides

Seen a pair work (or fail) in-game that the lists get wrong? One per line: Aardvark + Common Warthog = neutral (use thriving, neutral or no). Saved in this browser.

ℹ️ About this data

Re-checked on 23 Oct 2026, after updates 1.0.4 to 1.0.7, for all 136 species (v24 audit):
• Needs (areas, temperatures, groups, barriers, salinity, shelter, humidity): Frontier’s official Zoopedia data, cross-checked against the in-game values on the Planet Zoo 2 wiki. Both agree for every species.
• Cohabitation: Frontier’s neutral lists plus the in-game thriving social groups, confirmed against the in-game Zoopedia.
• Terrain (v17): each species’ terrain ranges from Frontier’s official Zoopedia data, read 22 Oct 2026; Thriving terrains come from the research levels.
• Thriving requirements: the in-game research levels from the wiki’s species pages. Shoals and exhibit animals have none; their research only raises fertility.
• Shoals: Frontier counts a shoal species’ population in shoals (1–5, 1–4 or 1–3 per habitat) and its extra space “per additional animal”, so the planner adds the extra space per extra shoal. Javanese Cownose Rays are individuals (5–40), not a shoal.
• Still unconfirmed: Frontier’s web Zoopedia is dated 5 Oct 2026, before update 1.0.4 changed some cohabitation lists without naming them, and no other source lists neutral pairs. Minimum ecosystem sizes in reserves are unpublished, so reserve zone sizes are relative only.
• Rides through habitats (v25): the five transport rides are from the wiki; a ride track enters and leaves through guest gates (one each way, checked in-game 25 Oct 2026); animals not crossing a ground track comes from Planet Zoo 2 players (Steam, Oct 2026). The game publishes no ride-stress flag, so “edge or overhead only” is based on Frontier’s plant-cover needs plus real-world behaviour. If anything in-game differs, use or add an override.

ℹ️ About reserve data

Release groups, research levels, requirements, species roles and ecosystem requirements come from the Planet Zoo 2 wiki’s release-group and ecosystem pages (checked 20 Oct 2026). Which species live in each reserve, the release-group types, the roles each species fills and the roles it needs all match Frontier’s official Zoopedia data (checked 22 Oct 2026). The Sunda Pangolin needs Lowland Rainforest only (confirmed in-game 24 Oct; the wiki’s Limestone Hills requirement is out of date). A requirement for “Lake” or “Grassland” means that reserve’s own version (Lake (Temperate) in Poland, Lake (Taiga) in the taiga reserves, Grassland (Tropical) in Sumatra). Role-fillers are counted across the reserve, so release them inside or beside the ecosystem they help. The wiki gives no minimum ecosystem area, so zone sizes on the map are illustrative. Ecosystem requirements (terrain, water, elevation, nature amounts, flourishing roles) for all 32 ecosystems were re-checked on 23 Oct 2026. Biodiversity and research-network advice follows Frontier’s Wildlife Reserves player guide.

🛤️ Guest paths

Sketch your zoo’s paths to scale, then check them against what Planet Zoo 2 players report about crowds. Frontier hasn’t published how guests pick routes, so every check says where its rule comes from.

📘 Path rules

What Planet Zoo 2 players agree on since launch (13 Oct 2026), with Planet Zoo 1 tips marked. Nothing here comes from Frontier, because Frontier hasn’t published how crowding works.
  1. Make the entrance a plaza. Every guest passes through it. Keep shops and vending machines off it: players report jams around a vending machine just inside the gate. PZ2 players report
  2. Main paths about 8 m or wider. 4 m is the smallest width in game, and players say 4 m paths crowd quickly. Two paths side by side make a boulevard. PZ2 players report
  3. Branch before the first habitat, so there’s no single spot everyone must pass. PZ2 players report
  4. Loops, not dead ends. Guests turning back meet the people still walking in. Rule of thumb
  5. Keep viewing off the main path. Guests stop wherever they can see animals, and skip bridges, tunnels and side viewpoints if they can already see from the main path. Screen that side and give the view a short side path. PZ2 players report
  6. Keep guest gates and aquarium tunnels off busy paths. Their entrances narrow to about 4 m, and the funnel backs up. PZ2 players report
  7. Spread the draws. Guests crowd food stalls and rush anything newly placed. Many small outlets around the zoo beat one food court, and big new attractions are best added in a quiet area. PZ2 players report
  8. Put a big draw deep in the zoo, and use a transport ride’s second station to pull guests to the back. Planet Zoo 1 tip
  9. About one toilet block per 1,000 guests. One PZ2 source
  10. Last resort: a guest cap or higher ticket prices. Players use caps of 500 to 1,000 to stop jams and frame-rate drops, at the cost of income. PZ2 players report
How the checks work, and what isn’t known
• Trips: the map sends one trip from the entrance to every habitat (weighted ×3), shop, toilet, gate, tunnel, viewpoint and station by the shortest path, and colours each path by the share of trips that use it. Players report PZ2 guests mostly take the shortest route, but this is an estimate, not the game’s crowd model.
• On a path: an item counts as reachable when it is within 4 m of a path’s edge (habitats within 3 m), or inside a plaza.
• Main path width: 6 m below 1,000 guests, 8 m up to 2,500 and 10 m above. This is my rule of thumb from players’ 8 m advice and a Planet Zoo 1 report of jams starting near 2,000 guests.
• Not known yet: how the game measures crowding, whether there is a crowding thought or heatmap in PZ2, the largest path width, whether wider paths make guests walk faster, and whether PZ1’s no-entry path barriers work the same way. If you check one in game, tell me and I’ll update the rules.
